Our mission is to foster friendships among Latin students and instill a passion for the language, culture, and history of Ancient Greece and Rome.
The Latin program at Kell was established in 200_ and has thrived since then. Our fabulous sponsor is Magistra Ashley McIntosh, who graduated from LSU. She has taught here at Kell for 6 years. She loves Latin and makes both class and club engaging, fun, and exciting every day.
In Latin, your student will explore both the Latin and English languages, read period texts in Latin, learn the fascinating history of ancient Europe and Egypt, and gain a greater understanding of Roman culture and mythology. Topics reviewed frequently include: grammar, literature, poetry, history, military tactics, ancient weaponry, culture, mythology, religion, geography, art, engineering, and architecture. There is something of interest to everyone.
In addition, Latin students also have the amazing opportunity, every other year, to travel to Italy! Specific destinations differ every year; however, no matter when or where you go, it is a fantastic trip, a fantastic experience-- one you'll never forget.
Class occurs during the students' indicated period every day in a semester. Kell currently offers Latin I-VI, including AP Latin. Club is held once per week, currently on Wednesday afternoons in the Latin Room, room #2407 in the foreign language hallway. (See 'Upcoming Events' on the home page for more information.)
Our chapter of the Junior Classical League (Latin Club) is also guided by peer-elected student officers who help manage, connect, organize, and engage. Currently, we have two Co-Consuls (Co-Presidents), a Vice-President, a Public Relations Officer, a Parliamentarian, and a Webmaster.
Our rival is German Club, with whom we play (and defeat) in annual kickball tournaments. Students have a blast in this competitive, exciting event, and it always draws high participation from both classes.
